With the temperature dropping by the millisecond as Londoners return from their extended Christmas breaks in the sunny Southern Hemisphere, the contrast in temperatures is a shock to ones system. How can we make these dark winter months more bearable? We are creatures of habit and we seek comfort and warmth in the form of hearty roast dinners and red wine on tap. This post is my tribute to those London establishments serving up the best roast dinner's in town. Londoners - its time to start embracing winter because it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Wrap up warm and enjoy the feast...
The Beast of Brixton - As the name suggests, this little find is situated on the corner of Brixton's busy Acre Lane, in the two floors above (A derelict shop?) It's hard to tell what is underneath, but certainly not your usual venue for your Traditional Sunday Roast. The Beast is intimate with minimalist vibes. Day of the dead skull symbol'd wall paper lines the hallway and obscure animal skulls great you on your way in - but keep heading upwards - the food is worth it! Book early on a Sunday to avoid disappointment (the guy beside me ordered the last available lamb of the day - gutted!). Possibly not one to bring the 'Rents of a Sunday afternoon but their cocktails are banging.
Best for: THE MOTHER OF ALL ROASTS & HAIR OF THE DOG!
The Bike Shed, Shoreditch - A motor cycle club with a restaurant, cafe, lounge area, this is one for the cool kids. A Spacious venue with (lots of) exposed brick work, four arches and relaxed hospitality, this is a great space to chill and hang on a Sunday and sample the Roast specials on offer. There is also an extensive bar if you are in need of that bloody Mary. This is a family friendly, dog friendly environment and will have you intrigued for hours just exploring the venue and admiring the artwork.
Best for: Groups (thanks to the spacious venue) and one for the gram (because it's alternative)
The Engineer, Primrose Hill - last but not least, the Engineer is my all time favourite London venue for a Sunday Roast. Discretely stylish, tucked away off Princess Road, this little gem boasts one of the best roast beef dinners in London, served in a relaxed, chilled venue, situated across multiple floors. The beer garden is great in summer too. A great place for a quiet, intimate Sunday dinner, or great to impress any friends or family in town for the weekend.
Best For: Celeb spotting, variety of beer - and that beef though !
Sussex Restaurant - Nestled in the heart of Soho, this charming, rustic and understated restaurant churns out some of the best quality roast dinners I have had the privilege to taste. They offer a special Sunday menu 'Sunday on the farm' promoting local produce and daily specials. I was lucky enough to visit when the Chateaubriand was on the menu! They serve skyscraper Yorkshire puddings with every Roast and have an extensive wine menu to keep you entertained all day long. Next time I will try the beef Wellington!
Best For: Location - a central London venue and those Yorkshire puddings!
The Rye, Peckham - A hearty and happening pub just off Peckham Rye Park and Common, the Rye is a great fun spot for a Sunday Roast with friends. They boast a massive beer Garden, log fires for the summer months, and live sports screening all year round.
Best For: Sunday Funday with friends.
Roast Restaurant, Borough Market - if you don't want to wait until Sunday to indulge, Roast restaurant is perfect for all occasions. Situated in Borough Market's iconic Floral Hall building, every dish is delicious at Roast. On Sunday's they offer a special 'from the market' menu, showcasing the best of British produce sourced from the local market. Your regular Sunday roast specials feature with a few additional wilds cards.
Best For: A special occasion / date night or a Roast to impress
The Spaniards Inn, Hamstead - I just love this pub, it feels like it has been around for hundreds of years, in a grade 2 listed building full of character - if those walls could talk! Just a stroll away from beautiful and leafy Hamstead Heath in North West London, this is a great spot for family and friends after a stroll in the park and worth venturing off the beaten track. Their extensive Sunday menu offers all the traditional classics that you would expect from 'one of the best roast dinners in London town' but it is the charm of this pub that draws me back time and time again.
Best For: Ticking all the boxes - food, venue, location and ambiance
The Crab Tree, Hammersmith & Fulham - I just couldn't neglect this charming riverside pub that I called my local for many years. It still remains one of my faves! The Crab Tree do a great Roast dinner all year round. Try stick to the restaurant area or on a sunny day try and bag one of the riverside tables over looking the Thames. They have a great outside area and upstairs for private dining. Vibes are chilled and relaxed (except for the annual Oxford/Cambridge Boatrace) when then the atmosphere shifts to an all day rave.
Best For: Riverside Views and local vibes
The Camberwell Arms, Camberwell - This South London gem is a frequent name popping up on London foodies 'best of' lists and it is easy to see why when you visit this classic pub. Set over two floors, the Camberwell has a rustic charm with a decedent Sunday lunch menu that hails it leagues above your average pub lunch. Tip of the day - order the cheese board to finish.
Best For: The Food and the Sunday Lunch Menu
